Cleveland clinic is a leading centre for cardiac care .Major technological breakthrough occurs from this institute than any other place. Thousands of articles come out every year. Some articles , get global attention and make  a huge impact. These are usually related to a new hi- tech modality like CRT devices or percutaneous aortic valve deployment etc ,etc.

Some articles , which are very important  may not get the due  attention . Journal editorial boards often  have a scorecard called impact factor .That is ,   how  a  journal  is  impacting the practice habits of  medical professionals . Ideally we need to have to grade individual   articles with impact factor .Many articles may not have any significant  impact  however good the impact factor of the journal.

Here is an article,  which excellently depicts the principles of management of ACS.  It was published in 2003 JACC,  by Steven Nissen  from Cleveland,  Ohio .It deserves more attention . Every cardiologist , involved in ACS management should read this, especially the interventionist.

It was those great  years  1974 -1976.  Even before the concept of  PTCA was born, few  committed cardiologists  of New  Orleans were on a mission. Closing the ASD in cath lab. They  achieved it successfully with a umbrella device.

But 35 years later as on 2010 ,the concept though proven still struggles to prove itself.

This journal ,  dedicated to  cardiovascular  surgery from Brazil is doing a great job. Most of the articles are free. The Brazilian  progress   in cardiology and cardiac surgery  is  a   “No  mean” achievement.

Learn for yourself how the country ,  which many  think  is not yet  developed is doing pioneering  research and  perform  state of the art cardiac surgeries. Often their  concepts and techniques are so unique  and innovative , evoke criticism in other quarters.

It is ironical , some of  the mediocre journals  from affluent countries are making  waves , this one  deserves much better recognition !

Which you think is the most important journal in cardiology ?

  • JACC ?
  • Circulation ?
  • American journal of cardiology ?
  • American heart journal ?
  • Heart rhythm ?
  • European heart journal ?
  • The Heart  ?
  • Journal of invasive cardiology ?
  • NEJM ?
  • Lancet ?

None of the above  . . . is the right answer !

Probably,  the best journal  that is going to have the  greatest impact in cardiology practice in the future  could be  this  . . .

Unfortunately  most  cardiologists are unaware of   this journal . The need for this journal , that  too from most respected Circulation family , will vouch for its importance in the current era  of  cardiology  that is driven more by the market forces than by the academics.

Journal  Highlights

  • This  journal is 3 year old , and most of the medical colleges   do not subscribe to this.
  • None of the 100  cardiologists  who were questioned , were unaware of such a journal.
  • Even those who read this journal often term as boring  , academic and not practical !

The Circulation team which  started this journal  with  only one purpose  . . .that is ,  auditing the uncontrolled  proliferation of  pseudoscientific literature without proper quality assessment and dubious outcomes. Three cheers to the circualtion team for publishing this journal and let us propogate the importance of this publication.

There are thousands of medical journal published worldover. Dozens are available in the field of cardiology .Only a few  are dedicated for pediatric cardiology.  Annals of pediatric cardiology is one .

It is all the more  creditable , as it comes from India , A country which is lesser known for scientific infrastructure  .  Full credit to the  pediatric cardiologist associataion of India and the medknow publishers for  bringing  this  highly specialised scientific content in this part of the world .
